Fly Fishing - An Addictive Hobby

Fly Fishing is a method of fishing that utilizes an artificial fly, a long flexible rod, a reel, and line. It is a very ancient and distinct angling method, developed primarily to catch trout and salmon but which is now being used to catch other species such as pike, bass, and carp, as well as a wide range of marine species. Artificial flies are crafted and then tied onto a hook with thread, fur, feathers and other materials in different sizes and colors to match naturally occurring insect or simply to attract a fish.

There are several standard method of presenting a fly to the fish using a fly rod and fly line which involves many different casts such as Fly Cast, Spin Cast, Back Cast, Forward Cast, False Cast, Roll Cast, "S" Cast and Shooting Line.

The most commonly used being the spin casting and the fly-casting. In spin casting the weight of the trap pulls the line out of the reel. In fly-casting the weight of the line is enough to carry the fly to the fish. You must learn to use the rod to cast the weight of the fly line.

The line and fly attached to it goes in the direction you point the rod tip during the cast. Good fly-casting is nothing to do about strength but it is all good timing which comes from practice. You have to spend at least 15 minutes a day to become a good caster in a month.

Proper stroking and correct stopping of the rod are fundamental to good fly casting. The caster loads all energy into the rod during the casting stroke. The rod then releases this energy into the line in the cast. The caster puts a short, low-energy stroke, into the top of the rod for short casts; while he loads a short, powerful stroke, into the middle and bottom of the rod for a long cast.

Casting arc is the arc the rod makes in the air during the cast, which is small for short casts and large for long casts. Precisely stopping the rod after the casting stroke is critical to forming the casting loop and it allows the rod to unload, thus casting the line.

Fly fishers never need to cast more than 50 feet when fishing. Still becoming proficient at long-distance casting can improve all your casting. You should first learn to cast short distance i.e.30 feet and then practice at greater and greater distances.

Fishing Sea Walls And Riprap

Tired of fishing with your GPS and finding nothing, tired of dragging that Carolina rig all over the bottom of the lake, tired of trying to come across that magic spot on the lake. Well you may be ready to try your hand at fishing rocky riprap or seawalls, those obvious shoreline, hugging features found on lakes, rivers and reservoirs across the county. These forms of cover can held bass throughout the year. These spots are simple to find and are easy to fish. Here are some tip for fishing riprap and seawalls.

SEAWALL PATTERN: When theres a large surface mat of water hyacinths has blown up against a long stretch of seawall. When you tie on a Gary Yamamoto custem bait 3 inches fat baby craw, with a big bullet weight and begin picking the floating vegation apart. Fishing floating mats against a seawall or near the seawall, there?s usually clean water underneath it all the way to the wall. This is a good spot do to combined horizontal cover with vertical and its open underneath. That crawl space will attract a lot of space.

Flip right through the top of the mat and start at the deep edge. But don?t forget to fish the seam between the mat and the seawall.

GIVE THE SEAWALL A HUG: One technique is paralleling the wall with hard plastic lures and buzz baits. Also hugging the wall with a lizard, tube, worm and creature is just as important. One of the most important things if your pitching against the wall is to get the bait to fall as close to the wall If you are using a baitcaster you have to feed line out to allow the bait to fall up against the wall. If you are using a spinning reel it?s the same just don?t close the bell until the bait hits the bottom. The other you can do is pitch the lure toward the wall and have it hit 1 to 3 inches before the wall, and then peel off line. It tends to fall more toward the wall.

FALL PATTERN: When fall comes the bass are migrating into and out of creeks, so the riprap provides an easy, dependable way to intercept bass. Fishing in the fall the bass are moving shallow or coming back out and they have to go through bridges to do that. So riprap along bridges would be a prime pattern Some good lures for this would be a shad colored crank bait like Rebel Wee R or 5A and 6A Bombers to crank the rocks, also the bomber long A jerk bait is another good choice. Cast parallel to the rock line and concentrate on deflecting the lure as often as possible. The biggest key in the fall is repetitive casting, you ask why, because the bass have seen lures all summer. So its important to cast repetition to a good looking area like a point of the riprap or a tree or brush laying down along the riprap.

PARALLEL PARKING FOR BASS: When it comes to bass fish there are not to many hard and fast rules but when you come across a seawall and lines of riprap, one rule rings come to mind. Take a casting angle that enables them to be paralleled with a lure. Another lure of choice for fishing seawalls and riprap or bulkheads are throwing a topwater and spinner baits in the morning, then a lipless crank bait or shallow diving crank bait later in the day. But regardless of the lure, always parallel them as much as possible and at least 45 degrees them, depending on the water depth and position the fish are in. Remember to put your lure as close to the wall as possible, or even bang it off the wall as you bring it back to the boat.

RIPRAP ROADMAP: Riprap can be intimidating to some fisherman or woman. Whether it is the foundation of a bridge, current break or erosion control for a stretch of shoreline, riprap can look over whelming in some situations. You may have riprap two miles long and it all looks the same, so where do you start bass fishing. You got to understand what lies beneath the surface is not exactly the same. Its important to locate irregular features in an otherwise uniform line of riprap. So you look for visible things like logs, treetop or flotsam that has drifted against the rocks or an unusually large rock is always worth fishing. But there are concealed irregular features that will hold a lot more bass. On lakes, a small ditch or creek may run into the riprap and come to a stop. Usually, a bridge crosses a channel and there will be a culvert nearby on one side of the riprap foundation. This can be an outstanding spot.0

Cold Weather Bass Fishing In Late Fall

When late fall comes around most anglers slow down on their fishing. Yes, the catch may be slower but you have to remember one thing?..the last thing a bass wants to do in the late fall is go deep, even with a cold front as long as their plenty of shallow cover. Wood is an excellent place for bass in the late fall, especially submerged and laydown trees.

Jigs, spinnerbaits, small crankbaits like the Little N, all are good lures to use at this time of year. Fishing pockets is also very productive this time of year. Remember to fish a spinnerbait lengthways down a submerged tree and lead the lure using your rod so it bumps off of big limbs from the tree.

Try using SuspenDots on the crankbaits to catch those suspended fish. Fish the trees by points and coves. Fish slower and don?t run from spot to spot but fish an area thoroughly. If you can fish trees submerged where one end is in about 7-9 feet of water, make sure you fish it.

Try deadsticking a Senko, I have had a lot of luck in late fall with this method, fish it slow and let it set for a little longer than you think you should.

Overall, the best I have done is with a little crankbait with a SuspenDot and fishing submerged trees on a point in fairly shallow water. Just because the temperature is lower doesn?t mean you can?t have a good day of fishing even if you have a cold front to
go along with it.

In this article we'll take a look at some of the elements that make these fishing lures so effective.

Hackle:
Hackle, or the neck feathers from a rooster, is one of the primary elements of a fishing fly. The hackle is what gives fishing flies their organic look and feel and also their intricate color patterns. Though many people seem to think fish aren't all that bright, they sure know enough to steer clear of putting anything in their mouths that doesn't look natural or like it absolutely belongs in the water.

The patterns and movement of the hackle are difficult to match with synthetic materials. When tying your own lures or buying fishing flies online or at the tackle shop, keep a look out for lures with Whiting Farms feathers-or at least fishing flies with organic hackle versus those made with synthetic materials.

Hair and Fur:
An alternative to the hackle fly is hair and fur fishing flies. They types of hair and fur most used for fishing flies are deer, beaver, opossum, otter, fox, and badger. As with hackle, there are synthetic hair and fur fishing flies, but most fish seem to respond more favorably to natural hair and fur materials. However, there are cases such as when fishing on dark river beds, when fishing flies constructed of brightly colored synthetics are a better choice. When setting out on a fishing trip it's best to have lots of different types and colors of fishing flies to try.

Thread, Yarn, and Wire:
Thread, chenille, braid, yarn, wire, and other spooled materials are most often used to recreate the thin, tight, body of the insect. Some types used are flat waxed nylon thread, gossamer silk thread, sparkle yarn, and mohair and all of these come in natural and bright colors. No matter how natural the color of the hackle of hair, oftentimes a little spark of color in the thread and yarn is what catches the fish's attention.

Eyes:
Not all fishing fly gear have eyes, but eyes are sometimes necessary with certain types of gear, especially those that look like other fish or small mammals. Eye styles can range from the "googley" type doll eyes that kids use in projects to silver or bronze beads, to reflective stickers.

There's no one correct style or material for catching every type of fish. For this reason, it's important to make sure that you take lots of different types and colors of fishing flies with you when you try out a new spot. Even in the same river, different fish within the same species will react to different things. Half the fun of fly fishing is experimenting with new styles and techniques and finding what works.

Deep Sea Fishing - Fishing Rods for the Big Ones

Lighter fishing rods are usually fine for fishing in rivers, lakes, or even from the ocean shore, but when it comes to deep sea fishing for larger fish, you are going to need a much stronger rod. Fishing for marlin, shark, large sea bass or giant halibut takes a strong rod - one that can take the weight of the fish, and that can also withstand the time it takes to land one.

Many deep sea fishermen tend to find graphite to be the best material for a heavy duty deep sea fishing rod. Although graphite is not as flexible as fiberglass, it is extremely strong despite its relatively light weight, which means that it can stand up to the weight of a large fish such as a marlin or shark, and will not be so heavy that a fisherman gets tired too easily when fighting a fish for a long time. Although graphite is used to make all kinds of fishing rods, such as lake fishing rods or fly fishing rods, it is still a good material for a deep sea fishing rod - the rod simply needs to be longer, wider, and denser. Graphite is not the only material used to make deep sea fishing rods, but it definitely is a popular choice.

Fiberglass rods are also used for deep sea fishing, and their greater flexibility means that they can also withstand the fight between a fisherman and a big fish. Though not as durable as graphite, therefore not as long lasting as graphite rods, fiberglass deep sea fishing rods will still last for an acceptable length of time, and will be able to provide a lot of good deep sea fishing hours before they wear out.

One of the best places to look for a good deep sea fishing rod is, believe it or not, the Internet. Even if you don't end up buying a deep sea fishing rod from an Internet web site, you can still find out a lot of information on the different types and styles, compare prices, and find out what accessories you need to go with your rod once you purchase it. Research is a key factor when you are buying something as important as a deep sea fishing rod; you don't want to go on that deep sea fishing trip you've been waiting for all your life and then find out that you purchased an inferior rod. Take advantage of the information that you can get on the Internet, as well as the information that you can get from experienced deep sea fishermen and personnel at stores that specialize in fishing equipment - especially ocean fishing equipment.

Experienced cooks will tell you that one of the secrets to getting a good deep fried turkey is what you put on it before it goes into the fryer. Do some research and you will find a myriad of recipes for turkey rubs, and once again, which one you choose is a matter of personal preference. Bass Fishing Tips: Being Prepared

Whether you are on a new lake, or on one that you call home, the main purpose is to locate and catch as many fish as possible. Each body of water has an endless supply of different forms of structure and cover in a variety of depths and water conditions. You can use many types of fishing equipment to be able to get a lot of fish in a proper and legal way, so we need to take good care of our equipment used for catching fish.

Here are some bass fishing equipment tips to be remembered:

* Keeping your feet dry. Seal skin sox, a waterproof pair of shoe that can be worn in any shoe. It will help you a lot in putting your boat in a low lake that calls for a need for you to step in the water too push off, by doing this your feet will be dry all day.

* Keeping your rods good as new. It is nice to look at, especially when you always keep your rod clean. Just use a simple prep pad in cleaning the cork handles on the rod. If the cork of your fishing rods is very untidy then it makes your rods look like hundred years older than it really is. Take a very light grade sand paper and sand the cork handles, you will find out that all the dirt will go away leaving you with a brand new looking fishing rod. Plus it will make your rod last longer.

* Hi- tech basin. Handheld computer and organizers such as the palm pilot can be very helpful to the bass angler. You may be able to log conditions, creating your own checklist to avoid forgetting stuffs, and store the numbers of your new friends you've met along the way. You can also download map for your destinations and when you reach home you can easily access all the information to your home computer for future purposes.

* Being prepared. Always carry equipment and parts in the boat just in case some failures or problems occur.

* Batteries. Always check if you have a good connection. Take care of your battery. Always bring a spare for emergency purposes.

* Being organized. Instead of using a plastic filing box, and some hanging folders why don't you just make an article and label them with general bass angling headings and file your articles as you finish them. Subscribing to a lot of fishing magazines and reading a lot of good articles will be able to help you for your future reference. You can put up a mini library that's all about bass fishing.

* Boat bearings. Many anglers forget to check their wheel bearings on their boat trailers. Every spring when you get your boat out of storage, always have your bearings checked. This could save you from a serious accident with your boat

* Rod basic. The most accurate casting is accomplished when bait casting equipment is cast overhand. Bait casting gear is extremely well suited for targeted fishing. On some occasions placing a lure under a boat dock, under over lying limbs or between pontoon boats may be necessary. In this situation skipping a lure is ideal. A spinning outfit is perfect for this chore. Be versatile and be able to use both types of equipment.

* Graphite rods. The biggest killer of graphite rods is impact against a hard object. It may not break in that spot the day it happens but there will be a weak spot at that point. Keep this in mind when stowing rods for travel. If you are keeping them on the deck, strap them flush against the deck so that the parts of the deck aren't rapping against it during travel.

If you are storing them in a locker, do the same or put them in a horizontal holding system, where they won't hit the side or floor of the locker. If you are the non boater and your partner doesn't have room in his locker, try to find the spot that minimizes the repeated bouncing they will take if they are laid over the gunwale. If you have to, lay them over your leg when running the big engine. It's never fun to set the hook on a good fish and end up with a three piece rod.
