Ice Fishing anyone?

Careful planning and preparation is all it takes bass fishing supplies to make ice fishing the greatest time of your life or the worst. Easy? Take a look at the following tips and see how prepared you are to catch those fish!

Buy early

Make fishing rods a list of the supplies you used go fish last season and replenish them early. Make sure you get all those Glo-Buster Bluelights or Lindy Tazers. All you need to remember is four words: wise up, stock up.

Check the hole on the ice floor

Simply put, make sure the hole is clean. Chips or chunks of ice could cause entanglements in ones fishing line and could make you catch fish or literally break your chances of getting any, as these could sever the line therefore losing your chance of getting that trophy of a lifetime bluegill. Remember to keep the hole clear of any barrier.

Fish more, get the big four

The bait you simply cannot go on without: wax worms, minnows, assorted PowerBait, maggots. It is best to keep these bait separated and as much as possible alive using coolers such as oregon fishing a small Coleman.

Clean `em all up

Inspect and clean the rods and fishing reels you are going to use. Q-tips are best for taking out the nicks in every nook and cranny of your ice rod. Non-freezing oil for lubing fishing rods fishing reels is advisable.

Heat up

Do not forget to bring those heaters and pounds and pounds of propane cylinders. One cannot fish comfortably if he or she is as cold as the fish under the ice. Ice fishing should be fun and feel comfy too. Minnesota Fishing

House up

The ice is harsh and cold but it doesnt mean you have to feel that too. Ice tents should be cleaned out as well by putting over a light coat of lubricant at the joints. If there is any wear or tear, it is best to contact the manufacturer in order for them to send out the appropriate repair kit, as deemed necessary.

Gear Up

Better be safe than sorry, make sure you get a set of lifeguard spikes as well as a safety rope. Also, to feel less of the cold and at the same time be cool, pick up a fishing coat from the Carhartt Extremes Arctic Jacket. Avoid frost bits on your toes and feet, the best shoes are the Irish Setters Versa Trax to keep you warm all over.

A Quality Boat That You Can Take With You On Your Next Fishing Trip

Having a boat to fish from really gives the angler an advantage. There are so many more area's to access from a boat as opposed from walking along the bank. If you've never considered a quality inflatable boat for your fishing needs, you may want to. A quality inflatable is amazingly easy set up and also quite affordable. A quality inflatable boat may be something worth keeping in mind.

Many fishermen fish from shore because they don't have a boat. Let's face it, boats are expensive. Who's got thousands of extra dollars to spend on a boat? Many of us don't have that kind of extra money, but now there are affordable and convenient alternatives. It may sound crazy, but you may want to give a quality inflatable boat a shot. There are many advantages to owning a quality inflatable boat, and some of those advantages would include :

- Access to otherwise unaccesable water

- Easy assembly

- Lightweight

- Stable

Having a boat that you can take with you anywhere does have it's advantages. If you like to camp or have a RV, how nice and easy would it be to take a boat with you, if that boat were inflatable? When you have to trailer and tow your boat, it can become more of a pain in the butt to take it. An inflatable would be easy to take with you. Just throw it in your car or RV and if you want to use it, great, if you don't, no problem, just leave it in its bag. A quality boat, that you can take with you on your next fishing trip may be something worth considering.

Sparkle Pupa Emerger, Black

The Black Sparkle Pupa Emerger Fly is the result of closely observing hatching caddis flies in underwater environments. It is an unconventional but effective fish catcher. The antron case is supposed to imitate the gas bubbles used by hatching flies to propel them to the surface. Whether or not this is accurate trout seem to inhale this fly when caddis are hatching. It can be fished with a dead drift, twitched, or swung.

Fishing Conditions - South Platte River 3/10/08

Thu, 13 Mar 2008 05:01:52 -0700
3/13/08 Between Waterton and Chatfield Reservoir As I say, "Some days you have the river and some days the river has you." Today was one of the latter ones. The day was supposed to be at 550 by 3 pm in the afternoon. But the highest it got on the river was about 480 around 2 P.M. The water was a cold 38 - 400 Farenheit. and I saw only one 1/4" black stonefly and a small bwo adult around 2 pm. Did not see a fish nor have a strike. Seining produced one small caddis larvae around size 16 a

3/13/08 Yesterday I stopped by the Denver Angler to replace my net seine lost on the South Platte River Monday 3/10. I was impressed with the clean organized shop owned by Rick Typher. While there I purchased a net seine that fits in its own pouch attached to the handle of the landing net. The white soft seine material is fitted with an elastic band to hold it in place over the net for seining insects. You can leave the seine on the net all day, only removing it to net a fish. Or you can

The Fishing Reel - Tips For Routine Maintenance

Many anglers overlook the importance of their fishing reel. Many times your fishing rod and reel simply get thrown in the basement at the end of the fishing season and then dragged out at the beginning of the next season to be used again. You can run into some fairly serious problems with this type of scenario. Very often your reel will choose to not work properly at precisely the worst time, such as when you're fighting a large fish. This is why I do a little routine maintenance on my fishing reels before the start of every fishing season. You only have to lose a trophy one time because of your fishing reel not performing to make you a believer. Take my word for it. Do a littler routine "check up" before the beginning of every fishing season. Here's a list of what you'll need:

1) A small screwdriver (usually Phillips head)

2) A pair of needle nose pliers or hemostats

3) Lubricant. Either purchase a small bottle of reel oil or just use some WD-40

4) 2 or 3 small towels

5) Some Q-tips

6) A clear area to work. Any cleared off table will work fine.

First of all take your fishing reel off of your fishing rod. Now take the reel and some warm water and wipe it off thoroughly. Once you have the reel wiped of debris, remove the handle. It normally simply unscrews either by a screw that you back out with your fingers or by turning the handle the opposite direction that you turn while reeling. Once the handle is removed, set it aside.

Now locate which side of the reel has exposed screw heads and lay the reel so the screw heads are visible. Now using your small screwdriver, remove the screws that are holding the reel together. Once these screws are removed, set them aside as well. At this point you can remove the reel plate. Once the reel plate is removed the gears and springs on the inside are exposed. Without taking anything else apart, simply examine the inside of the fishing reel. Many times you can see sand and or dirt particles. Using the Q-tips, you want to gently remove any exposed sand or dirt particles. Once this is accomplished you want to add reel lubricant to any exposed gear (not too much, just enough to cover the gear).

At this point, simply reverse the process by installing the reel plate and screws. Add a little lubricant to the spindle of the handle and re-install the handle. That's it; you just maintained your fishing reel and shouldn't have any problems with it. I've been doing this to my fishing reels for a long time and it works wonders. I have fishing reels that are fifteen years old and still work like new. Doing maintenance such as this enables you to know if your reel is in need of being replaced, before you get on the water, which is what we want. Because losing a trophy because of a reel malfunction is no fun at all. This routine maintenance will alleviate that problem forever.

A Good Life Wasted: or Twenty Years as a Fishing Guide

Told through the eyes of a longtime Montana fishing guide and itinerant fishing bum, A Good Life Wasted offers a unique perspective on an implausible period in the recent history of human civilization. When Dave Ames started guiding, Rocky Mountain locals rode horses and dug camas roots; now they’re trading stock options on cell phones. The collision of stone and computer ages was short-lived, but the deep-rooted themes of this book remain.

A Good Life Wasted--a chronicle and celebration of the fishing-guide life--is poignant and spiritual; it’s Blackfoot Indians and copper miners’ daughters; it’s fiddles and guitars and the fabric of space; it’s about what happens to wild people when the wilderness is gone.

From the first chapter--in which Dave Ames recalls bluffing his way into a job as a fishing guide to the rich and famous (after barely managing to suppress the overwhelming urge to go postal at the federal agency where he suffered his first, and only, “real” job in a cubicle farm)--we’re hooked. We gladly follow Ames as he describes the rite of tasting clouds of mating midges to better match the hatch, tells the story of a fabled Blackfoot fishing guide, and shares his further adventures as a guy with no job, no office, and no stress. A Good Life Wasted spins a fascinating, compelling web--a web that entices the deskbound salary slave to make a break for it, and head west to big sky and fast, cold water, ASAP.

The Best alaska fishing guide Articles on Wine
Fishing, Oysters, Alligators and Me!

Sleet and occasional flurries of snow are making tap dancing sounds on my deck. Outside the cat is snuggled up inside his box in the garage. He's able to go outside if he wants, through the pet door which I have opened up again. A family of raccoons decided to move in with him and until they found a new home, I had to board up the pet door.

I'm keeping warm tonight by making plans for my summer vacation. I'm going to a warm and sunny beach on northern Florida's Gulf Coast. Having visited the Apalachicola area before, I've decided that that's where I'm going again! Since the last time I was there, I've done more research on the area and discovered that I missed a lot of things simply because I didn't do my homework before I arrived. This time I've made a list of some of the things I want to do when I get there this spring.

The first thing on my calendar when I get to the bay is to go oystering. I'm going to book a four hour trip with one of the guides who make his living harvesting oysters. I didn't make the trip any longer than 4 hours because after reading about the oystermen, who are called 'tongers', I don't believe my aching body would last more than a few hours. At that I may be pushing the limits of my endurance!

Charters will take 2-4 people with them at a time. That's about all the 20-24 foot boat will safely hold. The boat will have a culling board so you can sort the oysters according to size when you haul them aboard. The guide from whom I booked the charter says culling is not as easy as it sounds, but by the end of the tour I'll probably be an expert.

From what I have seen by watching oystermen from the shore, tonging looks like hard work. This is the way many of their fathers and grandfathers harvested oysters many years ago. They use a tool called 'tongs' that look like a heavy steel rake with long wooden handles that operate a little like a post hole digger. Sometimes the oyster beds are in 5-10 feet of water so the tonger has to be able to reach that far down.
This certainly sounds like work to me, but I want to take a shot at it.

Another item on my 'to do' list when I reach the Apalachicola area is to go to the St. Vincent National Wildlife Refuge. It's a barrier island, providing natural protection for the mainland from damaging winds and waves. You can only reach this northwestern Florida Gulf Coast island by boat. One of the great things about this place is that there are no human inhabitants. There are caretakers who live on the island sometimes and keep the place as natural as possible.

This island, with its marshes on the bay side of the island, is home for many specie of animals including Sambar deer, white tail-deer, alligators, loggerhead sea turtles, raccoons, ospreys, and bald eagles. Threatened or endangered bald eagles, sea turtles and the red wolf, enjoy life of the island. My wife is not as thrilled as I about going to an island that has neither souvineer shops nor restaurants, but to me this sounds like paradise. Spending the day fishing on the gulf side of the island and picking up shells that haven't been picked over by others is my idea of a relaxing vacation.

One of the brochures I've read boasts that as many as 2400 visitors boat to the island and walk the beach each year. Can you imagine? There are 2400 people on most Florida beaches each day! The island remains primitive and pristine because visitors to the island take care and clean up after themselves as they should on every beach.

These are my two must see trips I'll put on my calendar for this summer, but no vacation would be complete without dining out at local restaurants. The last time I was on St. George Island which is one of the four barrier islands protecting the mainland, there were two restaurants. All I can say is that one was wonderful, the way a seafood restaurant should be when you're on an island. The other one wasn't great. I would not recommend that one!

It doesn't take much to make me happy. Just give me a couple of brochures about fishing and eating and I'm happy. With each day getting a little longer than the one before, I know it's getting closer to vacation time!

Deep Sparkle Pupa, Olive

This popular and innovative Olive Deep Sparkle Pupa pattern was developed by the late Gary LaFontaine. Hours of underwater reasearch with scuba or snorkel equipment revealed that caddis can form a gas bubble around themselves when prepering to hatch. The antron or Z-lon case around this fly forms a transluscent impression of that bubble that trout find hard to resist. Fly fishermen everywhere have made this fly one of the staples in their selections.

Shasta Lake salmon provide spring fever cure

For many Del Norte County residents, the spring fever that accompanies the arrival of April involves a trip to Shasta Lake, one of Northern California's largest reservoirs.

Advice For Finding The Best Fly Fishing Trips

So you have decided that it?s time for you to take your very first fly fishing trip. You have been practicing your casting and you have got all your flies ready to land a big fish. What do you need to think about when planning this fly fishing trip?

The first thing to decide is where to go. There are many, many excellent places to hone your fly fishing skills at. Some great locations to consider are Washington state, Oregon, Northern California, Texas, and the Great Lakes region. Pick a place that is readily accessible for you and that will not break the bank when it comes time to pay for it.

If adventure is your game, look into taking a Canadian fly fishing trip. Most of the best fishing in Canada can be found in remote mountain lakes and streams with lodges only accessible by air or train. Most of the lodges will offer you trained guides to lead you to the fishing spots and transportation is included in the price of your stay. We have even seen one lodge that will give you use of its cabin and you are left on your own in the wilderness. This can be an amazingly liberating adventure!

Be sure and find a lodge where everything is included in the cost of your stay. This means transportation to and from the fishing spots, guided tours, along with your rooms. Many places have restaurants in their establishments, but you might want to find a cabin with full kitchen facilities where you can cook your own food when you come back from the river or lake.

Fly fishing trips are much more fun when you have a group of people who share your same interests. It?s a good idea to join a group who share the interest and try to plan a trip with them. Many organizations plan and launch trips on a regular basis. The friendship and camaraderie you will find can be a wonderful experience.

You can also combine your fly fishing with other things while on a trip. Think about where friends and family live. Can you spend a little time fishing and then, in your downtime, do a little visiting? Is there someplace you have always wanted to visit but never really had a reason why? Try taking a fly fishing trip there.

There are so many beautiful destinations you can go to when you want to take a trip to do some fly fishing. Pick one, plan well, and then just enjoy. You?ll be opening up a whole new world to yourself on a trip like this. And, you might just bring home some prized fish as proof of your prowess. Then you can start planning another trip!

How To Stop Frustrating Yourself By Using A Good Bass Fishing Tackle System!

It's frustrating isn't it, when your bass fishing tackle looks like a "mish mash" and you need something in a hurry because the bass are biting furiously and your hooks are all over the place tangled in your line. It's an angler's nightmare but one which can be so easily avoided with good tackle management practices.

Organising Your Bass Fishing Tackle

As a child, I often used to watch in wonderment at my old man before every fishing excursion; he was so organised that there wasn't an item in his tackle box which he wasn't aware of. He always spent time before we left organising everything neatly into an arrangement so when he needed it, he didn't have to waste valuable time looking for it.

To be honest, it drove me mad at the time because it seemed like a chore but years later, I've now realised how important managing bass fishing tackle really is.

Did You Know?

It's important to change up your baits when they are not producing. For example, when crank or spinner baits are producing lack lustre results then consider using the old reliable jerkbait. Yes, it has rescued many a fishing mission because of it's ability to find a fish in nearly all conditions.

Important Bass Fishing Tackle Questions

Finding a good storage system for your tackle is easy; there are so many quality products on the market. However, before you go out and spend money on a tackle box or soft binder system, decide firstly what is going to suit your angling activities. Do you like to spend hours on end on the water or do you simply prefer to "blow out the cobwebs" for a couple of hours to get your fishing fix?

Let's take a look at a few important aspects of your overall decision in bass fishing tackle management:

- How much tackle do you like to have on hand? A large storage system is no good if your a short burst type of angler as a bulky system will be more of an inconvenience than anything else. The reverse applies to a busy fisherman.

- How accessible is your tackle? Can you reach and locate it without having to fumble around looking for it and wasting precious fishing time?

- Organize your tackle in such a fashion so the most regularly used components are more easily accessible than those which aren't.

- Plan your fishing trip. This is definately connected with good bass fishing tackle management. If you are fishing a particular area or from a bank or boat, then organizing your tackle to compliment your fishing decision will cut down on the unnecessary waste of both time and needlessly taking equipment you don't need.

While the storage system is vital in good bass fishing tackle management, just as important are the various tackle organizers available on the market. Hooks in hook organizers, weights in weight organizers, baits in bait organizers...you get the picture. Organizers are ideal in larger storage systems such as the bulkier tackle boxes or simply keeping them in an area of the house such as a garage away from the children.

From traditional tackle boxes to the new soft binder storage units, managing tour tackle shouldn't be a chore; it should be a pleasure particularly if you are serious about your bass fishing.

I don?t know about you, but it seems to me that more and more people nowadays are starting to realize that there?s more to bass fishing than what they can see on TV shows during the weekends. And to me that?s definitely good news. At least now they?re being exposed to more of what is considered to be America?s #1 freshwater sport! Just tune in to any outdoors sports network on cable TV, and chances are you?ll see a few shows geared towards bass fishing. And for good reason. Even Wheaties got in on the act when they put a picture of a famous Bass Fishing pro on their box.

Want more proof? Go outside. Bass anglers can be found at every lake, river, pond and swamp that is accessible by boat. Watch the highways. You will see at least a dozen trailers pulling bass boats going by every day, more during peak seasons. Or you can go online. Typing in the keywords ?bass fishing? will net you different websites and blogs about bass fishing. Bass fishing clubs, charters and guides, bass fishing tournaments, bass boats, etc. The bass fishing industry has grown to an estimated $4.8 billion industry today, and still growing.

What is so great about bass fishing, anyway? For starters, bass fishing is open to everybody. It allows anyone with the dedication and discipline to learn about the sport to compete on an equal level, amateur or professional. With other sports, like basketball, football, baseball, and tennis, to name just a few, you?d have to be a gifted athlete and have excellent athletic abilities to succeed. I have spent years playing basketball, but still I haven?t managed to dunk a ball yet or shoot three-pointers consistently. Compare this with bass fishing. The more time you spend fishing and practicing and educating yourself about the important aspects of the sport, the more you will be able to compete at a pro level.

I?ve also noticed recently that bass fishing seems to develop closer relationships. Couples who enroll in bass fishing schools and spend lots of time together on the water, sharing the laughter and the excitement of catching bass, often comment that they should have done this years ago. It doesn?t make any difference at all with fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, brothers, sisters, boyfriends and girlfriends; bass fishing is one outdoor sport that almost anybody at all can enjoy.

One thing I?ve noticed when I go out with my wife, though. It?s irritating to admit it, but she?s become a better bass angler than me! Some of my male friends ruefully admit it, too. As a matter of fact, more women than ever before are showing interest about bass fishing and are even enrolling in bass fishing schools. All this just to show their husbands, fathers, or boyfriends that they can do it too.

And you know what? Kids seem to love this sport more than we do. At least that?s what it appears to me, especially after years of observing the faces of children when their parents bring them on fishing trips or enroll in fishing schools. You?d also have to see the precious looks on their faces when they catch a bass. You?ll see what I mean, then. Popular bass fishing pros and teachers are even receiving fan mail from boys and girls, wanting to know more about the sport, where to go fishing, and who can teach them. Now that?s enthusiasm!

Have you ever seen that slogan, ?Get Kids Hooked on Fishing Instead of Drugs?? It really makes perfect sense to me. But after all, I?m a long-time bass fishing fanatic. So don?t just take my word for it. Go ahead and learn about bass fishing, then go out into the water. I?m sure you?ll have an epiphany.
